Dr. Noble Jayasuriya, [B Sc (Agric) Ceylon, Ph.D. (Reading, UK)] is an animal nutritionist whose area of specialization is ‘improved utilization of locally available feed resources and the development of feed supplementation packages for ruminant animals in developing countries’.
Having served the Department of Animal Science of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya as an Associate Professor in Animal Science, he joined the International Atomic Energy Agency of the United Nations as a Technical Officer of the Joint FAO/IAEA Division. He served the IAEA as Technical Officer in Animal Production from 1984 to 1989, the FAO as the Animal Nutrition Expert of a UN funded project in Malawi from 1990 to 1994 and once again the IAEA as the Regional Expert for Animal Production in Africa from 1995-1999. On his return to Sri Lanka after serving the UN for over 14 years, he was appointed the Director of the National Science and Technology Commission (2000-2004) and thereafter the Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Science Foundation of the Ministry of Science and Technology (2004-2009). Now a retiree, Dr. Jayasuriya has widely travelled in developing countries in Asia, Africa, Middle East and Latin America, to co-ordinate, evaluate and monitor scientific research and development activities and provide technical expertise in the area of animal production to FAO and IAEA Member States. He has over 50 publications in refereed Scientific Journals and has been the author of many Chapters in Books, Compendia etc. and Co-Editor/Editor of many Conference Proceedings and books on livestock production. A Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Biology, United Kingdom he is a life member of the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science and a Hon. Scientific Advisor to the IFS, Sweden.
