Sri Lanka STI Contributions and Lost Opportunities

We do ask ourselves what has investments on science and technology in our land has delivered. Are we aware of what developments have taken place, contributed to the economy and society through our own STI developments? This is not a historical survey as that had been documented well. In the same process we would like to highlight lost opportunities too. Through archiving we hope to learn through both developments and lost opportunities and hopefully we would be better prepared next time. Then we may understand the value of investments in STI in future development planning.

National STI contribution Lost opportunities
The nation’s staple food, rice (Oryza sativa) has been highly improved to boost the rice
production by the research carried out in Rice Research and Development Institute. During
the last sixty years, sixty new and fifteen hybrid varieties have been released. Those
varieties have contributed to 70% of the country harvest recently and are capable of high
production, quick growth and short maturing.

In 1955, Mr.Ray Wijewardhane invented a two wheel tractor to help to small farmers of
Sri Lanka by mechanizing the industry. Unfortunately the country lost the opportunity to
manufacture but a company called ‘Landmaster” in United Kingdom took an instant
decision to eventual manufacturing of mass scale having the long term advantage of Mr.
Ray Wijewardhane’s innovation. This is a classic example for not considering the local
innovations that help and trigger the national development.
