Maheeni obtained her Bachelor Degree from University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka in Biological Sciences achieving the highest aggregate marks at the final examination and received the L. C. de Silva Memorial Gold Medal. Following her graduation she began her research career at the Department of Fisheries Biology and Department of Botany, University of Ruhuna. She received a scholarship from NORAD to follow her postgraduate studies. She completed her M. Sc. degree in the field of Aquaculture and Aquatic Resources Management at the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok and gained “Excellent” grade for her thesis titled “Effects of Pure Oxygen Injection on Shrimp Growth Performance and Water Quality in Closed Intensive Culture System”. She also obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in the field of Coastal Environment & Integrated Coastal Management (ICM) from Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok (GPA 3.96 & thesis titled “Potential Use of Natural Mangrove Wetlands as a Treatment Agent for Urban Waste Water in Negombo Sri Lanka”). Funded by an EU granted scholarship she completed a M. Phil at University of Ruhuna. Her M.Phil thesis was titled “A Study of Water Quality and Primary Productivity of Rekawa Lagoon Affected by a Restoration Measure”.She is well conversant in Project Cycle Management and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). She started her professional carrier working as the Deputy Project Manager of the Coastal Environmental Resource Management (CERM) component of the Coastal Resources Management Project funded by Asian Development Bank and Government of Netherlands under the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development. Prior to joining COSTI she worked with Sevalanka Foundation for five years as the National Coordinator – Fisheries & Aquaculture and completed many projects funded by national and international organizations related to aquaculture, costal resources management and fisheries.
