Workshop on Future Earth – Developing a Research Agenda for Sri Lanka
In line with its mandate for coordination of science and technology activities under the theme ‘Climate Change and Future Earth’, COSTI – the Coordinating Secretariat for Science Technology and Innovation established under the Senior Minister for Scientific Affairs is planning to hold a workshop on Future Earth from 17-18th September 2013 in Colombo, for assessing the present status and for developing a Research Agenda for Sri Lanka.
The proposed workshop will provide a national platform to co-identify, co-design and develop modalities to co-implement ST&I activities related to Future earth, including demand driven R&D by scientists, technologists, funding agencies, policy makers and end-users. The workshop will also discuss opportunities and challenges for implementing Future Earth initiative in Sri Lanka, and explore the best possible ways of establishing a national interface for Future Earth.
Future Earth is a 10-year international research initiative on Earth System research that will develop the knowledge for responding effectively to the risks and opportunities of global environmental change and for supporting transformation towards global sustainability in the coming decades. Future Earth will mobilize thousands of scientists while strengthening partnerships with policy-makers and other stakeholders to provide sustainability options and solutions in the wake of Rio+20.
