Dr Geetha Abeysinghe

For Research Profile See Sri Lanka Innovation Dashboard Profile :

Geeetha completed her first degree in Physics with first class from University of Madras. She was working in the industry for several years where she developed her interest in Computing. She followed her postgraduate studies in computer studies at University of Essex, UK, after which she joined the academia. After a few years of lecturing in Sri Lanka she returned to UK to read for her PhD (Event Calculus to support temporal reasoning in a clinical domain) at University of Southampton.
After 3 years as a post-doctoral research fellow at Southamption, she joined Middlesex University, London 1997 and has more than 15 years experience managing programmes and projects there. She was also a program evaluator and reviewer, a trained appraiser, and a link tutor for collaborative partners and has also acted as external examiner to other UK universities.

Geetha has participated in a number of projects both UK and European funded, gaining extensive experience with international collaborations and project management: European project of the Lifelong Learning programme of Leonardo da Vinci transfer of Innovation; TEMPUS project which aimed at developing information literacy for lifelong learning and knowledge economy in Western Balkan countries; EC Esprit Framework IV in process re-engineering which aimed to re-engineer some of the business processes in the end-user companies by introducing current Information and Communication Technologies to the construction industry, and Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC), UK project on developing a common system for programme description for educational systems; HE Academy Subject Centre for Information and Computer Sciences Development Fund in studying effective ways of using discussion forums to aid student learning, are a few.
Geetha is a member of various International bodies such as: the British Computer Society (BCS); UK Academy of Information Systems (UKAIS), and Association for learning Technologies (ALT), UK.
She strongly believes in inclusivity and knowledge sharing. Her early interest in the social aspects of Information Systems is demonstrated by her keynote address at the First International Conference on Semantic E-business and Enterprise Systems in 2008 (SEEC 2008, Kerala, India). She has been researching on various aspects of social networking as demonstrated by her publications.
Geetha’s early work is on Business Process Modelling: mapping the business process; methods for process elicitation, analysis and modelling. She developed (with Bavan) a new notation NMDS (Notation for Modelling guarded Distributed Systems) a graphical notation based on Role Activity Diagrams (RADs) introduced by Martyn Ould to model distributed guarded processes based on the language LIPS by Dr Bavan. A number of papers has been published on this work.
